The 13th district of Paris is relatively unknown, even sometimes by Parisians themselves.

Hidden in a corner of the 13th, the Butte aux cailles , literally the hill of the quails, is one of these Parisian areas we can consider as a village with its authenticity and charm unchanged.

Much less famous than its rival the Butte Montmartre, the Butte aux cailles offers charming cobbled streets, flowery alleys with villas, a small square that looks like a village square and where the magic of Paris takes place immediately.

In the last century the Butte aux cailles was the area of the tanners and leather craftsmen who benefited from the waters of the Bièvre river still in surface at that time.

Today the Butte aux Cailles is also one of the favourite spots for expression of graffiti artists. And at the instigation of galleries and the city council, all the 13th district becomes a showcase for urban art in line with New York or Lisbon.

I highly recommend the visit of this "small village in the city" to discover the authentic charm of an old Paris as well as the street-art frenzy in this amazing open-air museum.

You will find easily charming coffees, brasseries and small restaurants but also nice fashion and craft shops, all you need to spend a pleasant day strolling among the back alleys of the Butte aux Cailles.
